さらす【曝す･晒す】

1 【曝す】 〔日光や風雨が当たるままにしておく〕 expose 《to sunlight [wind, rain]》.

●日[直射日光]にさらす expose sth to the sun [direct sunlight]

・雨[風雨]にさらす expose sth to the rain [elements]

・風雨にさらされた weather-beaten

・風雨にさらされた白骨 weather-beaten [weather-bleached] dry bones

・炎天にさらされる be exposed to (the heat of) the burning sun.

●その石像は長い間風雨にさらされていたのだ. That stone image had long been exposed to the elements.

2 【晒す】 〔漂白やあく抜きなどのため水などにつける〕 soak; steep; rinse; 〔漂白する〕 bleach; blanch; 〔精製する〕 refine.

3 【曝す】 〔人目に触れるようにする〕 expose to public view.

●首をさらす gibbet a head

・罪人をさらす pillory a criminal

・天下に恥をさらす make a public laughingstock of oneself; disgrace oneself before the world.
